Tsavo West and the Chyulu hills ecosystem is located half way between Nairobi and Mombasa and is to the right side of the main highway which basically acts as a boundary between the East and West.
It has fascinating and awe inspiring landscape, which is an evidence of volcanic activities that happened less than 300 years ago. The Volcanic lava flow of ‘shetani and chaimu’ can be viewed clearly from this park.
The sanctuary is one of the World’s leading biodiversity areas, with substream rivers flowing underground from Mt. Kilimanjaro through volcanic rocks to form the Mzima Springs. The spring has crystal clear water and is home to hundreds of hippo’s and crocodiles. It has an underground observatory; it is also the source of water for Mombasa .One of the outstanding features is the huge population of Elephants, which derive their colour from the rich red earth of the park. The park is also a host to several other mammals including buffalo, Zebra, Giraffe, Greater and lesser Kudu, waterbuck, eland, dik dik, among others, predators that can occassionaly be spotted include Lion, leopard, cheetah, Hunting dog {rare} and hyenas. Accommodation is at the famous Kilaguni serena lodge, Ngulia lodge, Ngulia bandas and several other camps.
Safari Itinerary:
DAY1. 7:00am. Depart Nairobi for Tsavo west passing through the eastern plains of Kamba land and on to Emali, continue south enjoying beautiful sceneries and farm lands, you will notice the iconic giant baobab trees that dot most of this area, on a clearer day, you can be able to see Mt. Kilimanjaro and the chyulu hills to your left. Access Tsavo west through Mtito Andei gate and embark on an enroute game drive. Arrive you lodge in good time for lunch, check in and enjoy watching animals by the water hole.
Afternoon game drive will follow, this will take you to the chaimu and shetani lava flow, an awe striking area where the evidence of 300 years old volcanic activity in this area is well captured, search for animals as you drive back to the hotel. Enjoy your dinner and overnight in Tsavo west.{FB}
DAY2. 6:30am. Early morning game drive to capture animal activity at dawn, enjoy a magnificent sunrise through beautiful scenery of roaring hills and towering escarpments, this drive will also take you to the Mzima springs where crystal clear water has collected through underground streams fed by Mt. Kilimanjaro, this is an important biodiversity area that supports life not only in Tsavo but also in the larger coastal area since it is the main water supply for Mombasa. Return to Lodge for breakfast with an en route game drive. At midmorning load up for a drive back to Nairobi, your Lunch will be on the way. Arrive Nairobi in the evening.
