The 3oosq km Shimba hills National Reserve is to the south of Mombasa in Diani. It is an enchanting coastal rain forest of rolling grassland and scrubland. This park is home to the elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, giraffe and (newly introduced), sable antelope (only found here) and several species of primates. As a natural rain forest, the ‘Mvule’ tree, one of the African hardwood is still preserved here. Other species of trees found here are the coconut palm, orchids and mangoes.
The birdlife in Shimba hills constitutes some of the rarest species: the golden Oriole, black tailed bustard, and the Madagascar night heron. A popular spot worth visiting is the Sheldrick falls which is 25meters high and a vantage point for wildlife viewing.
Overnight at the Shimba Hills National park will be in the enchanting Shimba hills lodge which is a beautiful tree hotel raised on a platform of gigantic tree branches that serve as a foundation support system.
Safari program;
DAY1.8:00 am We shall pick you up from your hotel after breakfast for a 1 hour drive to the Shimba hills national park for those staying at South coast and other hotels close to Diani. For those who are coming from north coast, our safari will involve crossing the Likoni channel of the Indian Ocean using a public ferry, we shall therefore be required to pick you up 1 hour earlier from the normal departure time. Our drive covers the rural coastal villages dotted with palm trees, and traditional Swahili houses, we will be passing through the towns of Likoni, diani and kwale .Our game drive starts once we enter the park, we shall spend about 3 hours visiting several interesting spots within this expansive reserve. Later we proceed on to our reserved Shimba hills lodge for lunch and check in, enjoy beautiful views from the hotel deck which offers amazing sights sometimes as far as to the Indian Ocean.
4:00 pm. Proceed on for an afternoon game drive back into the park; watch out for reserve’s sable antelope and other extraordinary wildlife including the diverse flora and fauna. As the afternoon cools off you will take a 1hour guided walk towards the Sheldrick falls for an amazing view of this 25M tall water feature. Return to the Lodge at sunset for dinner and overnight.{FB}
DAY2.8:00 am. After breakfast take a relaxed walk by the lodge scenic grounds popular with bird watchers and naturalists, the ground provides one of the best nature trails, on a clear day, you can be able to see the Tsavo plains and Mt. Kilimanjaro in the horizons.
Return to the Lodge by mid-morning to prepare for a return journey to your residence, with prior arrangements you can have a second lunch and leave after Lunch or plan to stop somewhere on your way back to your Mombasa hotel. You shall be dropped at your residence by late afternoon after an amazing 2 days experience.{B}
