Home > WILDBEEST MIGRATION SAFARIS – KENYA

This is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles. It involves close to one and half million wildebeest and their migration partners, zebra and gazelles followed by their predators.
The migration covers a distance of 1000 km annually, from Serengeti national Park in northern Tanzania to Masai Mara game Reserve in southern Kenya.

In March and April, there is plenty of grass in southern Serengeti. By the end of May, which is the mating season for the wildebeest, dry season creeps in and the grass dries.
The migrating herds move to western Serengeti in search of feeding pastures. By July, the migration crosses Mara River to the fresh sweet grass in Mara Reserve. In October, the migration returns to Serengeti.

The greatest challenge in the migration is the crossing of Grumeti River in Serengeti and Mara River especially for the young calves normally born in March. Hundreds of them drown as they cross the swollen Mara River. They provide easy meals for crocodiles and vultures. This is a memorable and life changing event where you behold the magnificence of nature.
