Samburu Game Reserve is essentially an extinct lava plain that features steep sided gullies and rounded hills where the 32-kilometre EwasoNyiro River emerges both as the central feature of the landscape and the lifeline of the entire ecosystem. The vegetation comprises predominantly acacia woodland interspersed with thorn bush, dry grass and scrubland, which is broken here and there by small rugged hills, the river is bordered by a narrow gallery of riverine acacia woodland and flourishing doum palms. This is a dry country ecosystem and therefore prone to large variations in the animal populations as they move in search of water and pasture. And, whilst poaching has completely wiped out the rhino herds, lions are often seen while massive elephant herds are responsible for the damage of several sections of riverine forests. The range of rare species here includes reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa Oryx and gerenuk while the bird life is diverse and prolific and includes the rare vulturine guinea fowl and the Somali Ostrich.
Our journey then takes us to the olpejeta conservancy, a picturesque gem nestled at the base of Mount Kenya and overlooking the Aberdare Ranges. Explore the diverse ecosystems, from lush euclea greenery to open savannah grasslands and forests. witness the endless spectacle of amazing wildlife roaming free. OlPejeta, sitting right on the Equator is famed as the largest black rhino sanctuary in east Africa, and previously home to two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhinos. It is the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees, in a safe Sanctuary established to rescue and rehabilitate them from illegal game meat market; about 40 orphaned chimpanzees are protected here. Olpejeta also has some of the highest predator densities in Kenya, and still manages a very successful, vibrant livestock rearing program.
Lake Nakuru national park our next stop is one of the popular premier parks in Kenya. Set on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, its shallow soda lake and the surrounding habitats hosts over 400 bird species making it a favorite bird watcher’s paradise. In addition it is home to over 56 mammal species including the rare Rothschild Giraffe, a good number of Rhinos, Leopard and tree climbing lions. For plant species, the yellow fever acacia is the most dominant followed by Euphorbia cactus and a diverse vegetation cover of over 500 species. The park is generally famous for its large flocks of the greater and lesser flamingos.
As your adventure unfolds, we head for the famous Masai Mara Game reserve, the ultimate and undisputed wildlife arena in Kenya, here coming face to face with the “Big 5 of Africa” is an almost sure guarantee, you will have longer and interesting game drives, witnessing big predator activities as they pursue their prey and if the season is right, you shall follow the greatest yet phenomenal show on earth, “ the annual wildebeest migration”.
The consistent flat and open savannah grasslands of the Mara lends itself as an excellent game spotting haven, creating magical experiences for every guest.
